Come On: Does It Really Matter What Color It Is?

Plants_match_houseThis is something often over looked when purchasing or selling your home. Should the color of the outside of the house weigh in when making that all important decision to buy a particular house? Or stated differently, does it make a difference when trying to sell a house?

My family home, and a lot of my neighbor’s homes, were always white. I think it had a lot to do with white being less expensive in the 50’s. Plus, my Dad said, it was a good color! But now we have the availability of a world of colors to choose from.

The first house I ever owned was a baby blue aluminum-sided older home in Beloit, Wisconsin. I loved the charm of that little blue house with its white trim. I also reveled at the chance to plant flowers and gardens in my little yard. But as I started on my new venture, I noticed anything I planted next to the blue house either clashed or didn’t show up at all. Even plain green shrubs did not do a thing to improve the results.

Having bought and sold three houses since then and I’m not sure I’ve found the perfect color yet. There is something to be said for finding a color palette that will work for things we enjoy doing with our front yard, whether it’s landscaping or decorating for the holidays.

I’ve noticed decorations of fall and winter themes really show off with the darker more natural palettes. Burgundy, browns, dark beiges or greens really make the fall decorations of similar colors zing. The orange pumpkins seem to radiate from the corncobs and the colored leaves highlight the porches. Blending perfectly with the stones, wood and accent colors of the houses.

These fall decorations where found on homes in Crimson Point,in Kuna, Idaho, where a lot of darker house colors can be found. That might be where the name “Crimson” comes from. The subdivision certainly has a great palette of colors you can see from a distance.DSCN0005

Of course, choosing a home on just the color would not be practical, but it is something to consider, can I live with it or change it? So when looking at your next house, or considering new siding or paint, be sure to consider how your holiday decorations will look or how that gorgeous blue spruce will compliment the color of your house.

I just know I won’t every pick baby blue for a house color again.

Isn’t it amazing that people will often turn a home down because of the paint color? Ummm…you can paint it!

I had a new listing once that needed to be painted. We agreed to list it after they finished the new exterior paint job. They called me up the next week to come look at their new PLUM COLORED HOUSE. I didn’t advise them ahead of time to use a neutral color. We had to repaint it before we could sell it.

Purple must be one of those effie colors. I had painted an entrance door mauve, it got changed first thing after we sold it.

Colors can be so regional…blue is really the “kiss of death” for an exterior in Tampa…Taupe, Sage and earth colors rule…I love the shutters on the house in the photo…reminds me of Cape Cod, MA…but I could never put pink shutters on a house here!
